«Sing us the anthem» — one of those requests that freezes people even if they know the words. The issue is not ignorance of the text but being unprepared for the format itself. Most people read the anthem with their eyes but never sing it aloud — and at the interview the text is stuck somewhere between «I know it» and «I can reproduce it».
Good news: the consul does not expect an operatic performance. They listen to whether you start confidently, know the first stanza and refrain — and that the anthem is not abstract for you.
The text — first verse and refrain
kiedy my żyjemy.
Co nam obca przemoc wzięła,
szablą odbierzemy.
z ziemi włoskiej do Polski.
Za twoim przewodem
złączym się z narodem.
This is enough. If you confidently performed the first verse and refrain — the consul is satisfied. Starting from the second verse or mixing up stanzas is worse than stopping after the first.
Where this anthem came from
«Mazurek Dąbrowskiego» was written by Józef Wybicki in 1797 in Reggio Emilia, Italy. At the time Polish legions commanded by General Jan Henryk Dąbrowski were fighting on Napoleon's side — hoping he would help Poland regain independence.
The first line — «Poland has not yet perished» — was written at a moment when Poland did not exist on the map: it was partitioned between Russia, Prussia and Austria. The anthem expressed hope, not a statement of fact. The Mazurek became Poland's official anthem in 1926.
